Commonly know as "Eastern Salt Marsh Mosquito". Distinguished by it rusty coloring and banded legs. They become abundant after high tides or after a combination of high tides and heavy rain. They are generally found year round when the weather is warmer. During the colder months there numbers are reduced and Aedes vexans moves in as the dominate floodwater species. Our surveillance inspectors often encounter this species during the day.

Larval habitat: Breeds in ditches, grass pools, and marshes throughout the county. 

Adult habitat: Found in marshes, yards, fields, and wooded areas. This species is predominately found near salt marshes including the west end of Galveston, the  Bayou Vista area, and Bolivar Peninsula.

Biting activity: They prefer to bite during the early morning and late afternoon, however, resting females will actively bite during the day when disturbed or if an opportunity presents itself.

Flight range: More than 20 miles. Their flight range is large because they travel long distances outside the marshes to find a blood meal.
